Iran volleyball team blanks Turkey in FIVB U23 World Championship

Members of the national Iranian volleyball team celebrate after beating Turkey at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U23 World Championship in Cairo, Egypt, on August 21, 2017.

The national Iranian volleyball team has posted its third consecutive win at the preliminary round of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Volleyball Men's U23 World Championship in Egypt, and virtually confirmed its place in the next stage of the international tournament.

The Iranian outfit claimed a comfortable straight-sets win (15-12, 15-9, 17-15, 15-10) over Turkey in a Pool B match at Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex in the Egyptian capital city on Monday.

Sahand Allahverdian top scored for Iran with 11 points, while Turkey’s Melih Siratca bagged 10 points.

“We played today very well and achieved an important win; so I congratulate my players. It was not an easy match even though we won it in straight set. The scoring was narrow,” Iran’s head coach, Juan Cichllo, said after the match.

Iranian captain, Rahman Taghizadeh, said, “Mathematically, we have a chance for the semi-finals, but we must wait for the match against Russia the day after tomorrow.

“Turkey was a strong team and we managed to dominate the match and win the match in straight sets. We look for the match between Russia and Argentina and our match against Russia to know our situation.”

Turkey’s head coach Arig Resat said, “I have no comments about the match. We committed a lot of mistakes. There was no propos no volleyball in the court. Iran played very good. They played for winning, and they had discipline, that's all.”

“We started well, but we couldn't continue. I don't know why. In the last match of the tournament against Algeria we will do our best to win,” Turkish captain, Yasin Aydin, commented.

The 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men's U23 World Championship, which is the third edition of the international volleyball tournament, started in Cairo, Egypt, on August 18 and will finish on August 25.

Iran has been drawn in Pool B along with Algeria, Argentina, China, Russia and Turkey.

Pool A consists of Brazil, Cuba, Egypt, Japan, Mexico and Poland.
