White Supremacists crisis and Donald Trump
The US city of Charlottesville, Virginia was recently the scene of chaos triggered by a white supremacist rally. Nationalists, white supremacists, Neo-Nazis and other extremist groups came to the city from across the United States. The event turned into an unprecedented show of hatred towards minorities and immigrants. In the past, the extremist protesters mostly covered their faces during such rallies. But those in Charlottesville were so emboldened that they were not afraid to show their faces. They were however confronted by anti-fascist activists and demonstrators leading to fistfights and running battles in the streets.
Saudi Arabia asks Iraq to mediate with Iran
Indications emerged in Iran’s media over the weekend that Saudi Arabia has asked Iraq to mediate between Riyadh and Tehran. The media quoted the visiting Iraqi Interior Minister Qasim al-Araji as saying that the Saudi crown prince had asked Iraq’s Interior Minister Haider al-Abadi to lead the mediation with Iran. This is yet to be officially confirmed by all parties involved. It nevertheless is seen as an indication of a series of changes in the dynamics of regional politics. But what has specifically provoked the Saudis to seek better ties with Iran? And why do they want to do this through Iraq?
