Iran finishes 9th in Asian Women's Volleyball Championship

The Iran women’s national volleyball team

The Iran women’s national volleyball team has defeated Australia to end its campaign with a ninth place finish at the 19th edition of Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in the Philippines.

The Iranian squad overcame the Australian team 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-10) in a five-set thriller at Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Muntinlupa.

The Iranian sportswomen served a sweet revenge to their Australian counterparts, who handed them a 1-3 (23–25, 25–22, 25–20 and 25–22) loss in their Pool G match-up on August 14.

Mina Roosta scored a match-high 10 points for Iran, while Soudabeh Bagherpour added 8.

“I came to coach Iran just two months ago, and I changed four or five players in favor of the young ones,” Mirmostafa Shojaei, technical advisor for the national Iranian women’s volleyball team, said after the match.

He added, “I think our team will be good next month in Thailand for the World Championship Asian Qualifier Pool B.”

“Our game today is a good reflection of how we played in the entire tournament, very inconsistent,” Australia head coach Shannon Winzer commented on the other hand.

She added, “Our goal in next Asian Championship would be inside the top 8 and for us to do that is to increase the number of players we can send overseas to improve their skills.”

The 19th edition of Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship opened on August 9 and will finish on August 17, 2017 in the Philippines. Matches are being held at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan and Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Muntinlupa.
