US-North Korea tensions

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis has warned that the tragedy of war between the United States and North Korea would be catastrophic. Mattis added that the US is doing whatever it can to get the situation under control. The Pentagon chief said the US is trying to make its military more lethal and capable of defending. Mattis reiterated that Washington is ready for any confrontation with Pyongyang. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has issued fresh warnings to North Korea, saying his previous comments may have been too soft.

US-led airstrike in Afghanistan

Afghan officials say at least 16 civilians have been killed by the latest US-led airstrike in the country’s east. A spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province said women and children were among the fatalities. Washington has not commented on the report yet. US airplanes frequently bomb positions in Nangarhar province, claiming to be targeting Taliban militants. The air raids have, however, taken the lives of many civilians in recent years.

Kenya election

Security’s been beefed up in Kenya’s capital as the country awaits the final result of Tuesday’s highly-disputed presidential election. Hundreds of anti-riot security forces are patrolling opposition strongholds in Nairobi as well as the city's central business district which is facing a total shutdown. Streets of the capital are witnessing mounting tensions with protesters gathering in different parts of the city. Meanwhile, the Kenyan government and the independent commission in charge of the election have urged citizens to return to work, reassuring them that the country's safe. Opposition candidate Raila Odinga claims that early vote results were manipulated in favor of Kenyatta, who holds a strong lead. The election commission admits that there was a failed hacking attempt, but says their systems remain uncompromised. Final results are expected later on Friday.

Trump warns North Korea again

US President Donald Trump has issued a new warning against North Korea despite attempts by other US officials to resolve the crisis diplomatically. In another tweet, Trump said the military solutions are now “fully in place, locked and loaded” should North Korea act unwisely. Trump also expressed hope that North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un will find another path. Trump’s comments come after the US Secretary of Defense James Mattis warned that a war between the United States and North Korea would have catastrophic implications.

Iran nuclear deal

Iran has accused the United States of violating the 2015 nuclear deal in both letter and spirit. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said US President Donald Trump has always wanted to kill the agreement, also known as JCPOA. He said the White House now wants to avoid isolation by accusing Iran of not sticking to its side of the deal. Earlier, Abbas Araqchi, the head of the Iranian task force to monitor the implementation of the nuclear deal warned that failing to abide by the accord will have serious consequences for the party that decides to violate the agreement. He said Iran is prepared for any possible scenario. Russia has also criticized the US, saying it’s a pity Washington is casting doubt on the JCPOA.

Deadly US-led strikes in Syria

A leading rights group and an NGO are expressing alarm at the increasingly high civilian death toll at the hands of the US-led coalition in Syria. Human Rights Watch says the coalition must be more transparent on its targeting decisions. This amid reports the US administration has loosened its strike policy. Meanwhile, the NGO known as Sound and Picture has said the coalition is not taking any precautions to avoid civilian causalities. Sound and Picture, which has clandestine reporters in Daesh-controlled Raqqah, have warned the city could be freed from both the terror group as well as all its residents. In recent weeks, a series of US-led air raids have killed hundreds of civilians across Syria.
