UN sanctions against North Korea
This past Saturday, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to impose new sanctions on North Korea over the country's long-range missile tests last month. The sanctions came as North Korea has consistently blamed the US for escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula by carrying out joint military exercises in the region with South Korea. North Korea has already faced a decade's worth of ever-increasing sanctions backed by the US and its allies. At this time, there are no telltale signs to show that North Korea is to cave in to the US-led sanctions.
Suspicious growing over Haftar-Israel ties
A media report has quoted an informed Israeli source as saying that Israel has bombed the positions of Daesh in Libya on behalf of strongman General Khalifa Haftar. Analysts believe that Israel naturally likes Middle Eastern strongmen with little or no religious or ideological commitments like Jordan’s King Abdullah, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Libya’s Khalifah Haftar. Haftar is an ally of western-backed arab states, like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. One report has taken a further step, claiming Israel did bomb Sirte for Haftar after the Saudis requested Tel Aviv to do so.
