Indigenous Bolivians celebrate Day of Mother Earth

Day of Mother Earth in Bolivia

Indigenous Bolivians have celebrated the Day of Mother Earth to thank the planet for the bounty of the agricultural season.
Native people in the country honored "Pachamama," the goddess of earth and fertility with special festivities.

According to the Andean tradition, Mother Earth opens her mouth in August to receive offerings from believers as a sign of gratitude and request for continued health.

Believers 'feed the earth by burying clay containers of boiled food, together with coca leaves and cigarettes'.
