The Persian Gulf diplomatic crisis
In his first speech since four Arab countries severed ties with his country, Qatar’s emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani called for dialog to resolve the crisis. “The time has come for us to spare the people from the political differences between the governments,” he said in a televised speech regarding the recent diplomatic spat with Saudi Arabia and several of its Persian Gulf allies. However, the United Arab Emirates has rejected the Qatari call for dialog, saying Doha has first to change its policies.
Poland plunging into political crisis
The European Union is facing another challenge as its member state Poland is rocked by a crisis mostly blamed on the government. Thousands of citizens over the weekend took to the streets across more than 100 cities countrywide to oppose a law passed by the parliament which puts the Supreme Court under the control of the government. Under the law, the Supreme Court judges are forced into early retirement and the new judges will be chosen by the justice ministry. Critics are accusing the government of President Adrzeij Duda of blatant power grab. The president insists that the shakeup at the Supreme Court is part of needed judicial reform.
