The Iran men's national under-23 volleyball team has stormed past Iraq in the preliminary round of the 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship in Indonesia.

On Monday, Iranian squad dominated the Iraqi outfit with a straight-set win (25-17, 25-16, 25-21) in its opening Pool B fixture staged at Wahana Ekspresi Poesponggoro Gymnasium in Indonesia’s regency of Gresik.

Iran’s U-23 head coach Juan Manuel Cichello expressed satisfaction with his boys’ performance after the match.

“It is rather difficult when a team opens its campaign in a tournament, especially as we are making debut in this senior championship. We were weak in reception, but did well in attacks and spikes. We could also place the opposite team under pressure through good service. I am happy with the result, and hope that my team is better prepared for tomorrow’s match,” he said.

“Iraq was a good team despite the fact that we eased past it. They put pressure on us in some parts of the game. Even though we were less experienced, we could take control of the fixture and defeated the opposite side,” Iran’s captain Rahman Taghizadeh commented.

The Iran men's national under-23 volleyball team is scheduled to face Pakistan in its second match on Tuesday.
