Boycott, Divest, Sanction

BDS under attack
The Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment Movement is under attack; this time by US lawmakers. The movement seeks to raise global awareness about the racist policies of the Israeli regime and discourage companies from doing business with the occupiers of Palestinian lands. But now US lawmakers are trying to outlaw the movement: A group of Senators are preparing a bill that would penalize any American who supports the movement: a minimum civil penalty of $250,000 and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison. The bill is said to have been drafted with the assistance of  American Israel Public Affairs Committee or AIPAC. A  similar bill has also been introduced in the House and so far it has garnered the support of over 230 representatives.

Mini World War
Some media outlets and even world officials have on various occasions described the Syria conflict as a mini world war given the involvement of multiple players in the crisis. The Syria war has pitted many countries including allies against one another. One instance is Turkey versus the US. Now the gaps between Turkey and the US seem too irreconcilable to be resolved any time soon. Ankara is angry at Washington over the Trump administration’s policy in Syria and its support for Kurdish fighters who are seen by the Turkish government as an enemy. But recently the already tense relations between them came under further strain. This after Turkish media revealed the locations of the US troops in Syria. The United States conveyed its deep concern to Turkey over the matter. A Pentagon spokesman says the release of sensitive military information exposes US forces to unnecessary risk. Many believe that the Turkish intelligence leaked the information to the media deliberately.
