Iran beaten by Oman in 2018 AFC U-23 Championship qualification

The Iran national under-23 football team, also known as Iran U-23 or Iran Olympic Team, has ended its campaign at the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Championship qualification tournament with a bitter defeat against Oman.

On Sunday, the Iranian squad suffered a 0-2 loss the Omani team in its last Group A fixture at Dolen Omurzakov Stadium in the Kyrgyz capital city of Bishkek.

Midfielder Jameel al-Yahmadi opened the scoring for Oman in the third minute of the second period. Omani forward Muhsen al-Ghassani doubled the lead for his team in the 71st minute.

The 2018 AFC U-23 Championship qualification started on July 15, and finished on July 23, 2017.

Iran is drawn with Kyrgyzstan, Oman and Sri Lanka in Group A of the tournament. Sri Lanka later withdrew.

Group B consisted of Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. India, Syria, Turkmenistan and Qatar formed Group C.

 Lebanon, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan were pitted against each other in Group D.

Bangladesh, Jordan, Palestine and Tajikistan were in Group E, while Australia, Brunei, Myanmar and Singapore were drawn in Group F.

Group G had Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Laos and North Korea. Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia and Thailand were in Group H.

Macao, South Korea, Timor-Leste and Vietnam were drawn in Group I.
