Islam: The Essentials (Part III)

Professor Tariq Ramadan

Professor Tariq Ramadan, in this episode, explains more about his book Islam: The Essentials. He talks about integration and the importance of belonging, contributions and adding values.

Tariq says: the book focuses on the question of Muslims’ identity in the West, respecting the law, the sense of belonging. People are keep on repeating that you have to integrate within the society. I think that is enough now with integration! I am an European Muslim and I am integrated. May be your mind is not integrating me, but I am integrated. My question today is not being integrated, my question is what is the contribution for the future. Muslims have to change their mindset and say now our presence in the West is about our added values, our contributions.

Stop asking Muslims where do you come from. Let us to ask where are we going together? Following to recent incidents we need to get it right, Muslims are part of the solution, they are not the problem. The great majority of Muslims are condemning what is happening. This is a part of the solution. Bearing in mind most victims around the world are Muslims by the way. I want to tackle all of these issues but within the narrative of understanding the overall picture of Islam. So, we should not avoid any question but we should not enter to the universal reference through only the controversial questions as if we judge before understanding. This is why Tariq has added a section in his book about ten things that you don’t know about Islam. This is the effort for understanding the big picture of Islam.
