Superpower in decline
The G20 leaders’ summit 2017. This year’s meeting was fractious compared to previous rounds. The most noticeable difference was the new US president, Donald Trump.
Looking isolated and awkward in many of the scenes from Hamburg, Trump was left outside some of the summits’ key provisions such as measures to tackle climate change. But the president, who had spoken in favor of Russian and its leader, finally got to sit down with President Vladimir Putin, offering hope for better US-Russia ties in the future, although he also brought up allegations of Russian meddling in the US 2016 presidential election. Trump’s presence at the summit also served as a boost to protectionists all across the globe with G20 leaders acquiescing to drop a pledge to keep global trade free. Is globalization coming to an end?
China, meanwhile, managed to escape previous threats by Trump over North Korea and the situation in South China Sea.President Xi Jinping, meanwhile, was praised for his quiet success. Is Trump contributing to the decline of a superpower? This, and a whole lot more we learn from this year’s G20.
