A heatwave has hit Beijing, prompting zoo staff to take special measures to protect animals from high temperatures.

Employees of the Beijing Wildlife Park provided ice and watermelons for the animals and used water sprays to help them cool down.

The city issued this year's first yellow warning for high temperatures on July 9, which means temperatures over 35 degrees centigrade can be expected.

China has a three-level weather warning system, from yellow to orange and red. The alert in Beijing is expected to continue until July 14.
