Iranian professional volleyball team Sarmayeh Bank has defeated al-Bahri of Iraq in the 2017 Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship, and progressed to the semi-final round of the continental tournament.

On Tuesday, the Tehran-based volleyball team defeated the Iraqi squad 3-1 (25–12, 25–13, 23–25, 25-16) in a quarter-final match played in the northern Vietnamese city of Ninh Bình.

“We did not have a tough game against al-Bahri. But in the third set, I just wanted to give my players from the bench a chance to play more. I am very happy that we got through to the semi-finals. However, our Wednesday’s match in the semi-finals will be much tougher and we will do our best to secure a place in the final showdown,” Sarmayeh Bank’s head coach Mostafa Karkhaneh commented after the match.

Sarmayeh Bank will next take on Al Arabi Sports Club of Qatar on Wednesday.

The 2017 Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship is being held in the Vietnamese cities of Ninh Bình and Nam Định between June 28 and July 6.

Samayeh Bank recorded a hard-earned 3-1 (24–26, 25–18, 25–16 and 25–19) win over Al Arabi in the title clash of the 2016 Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship in the Myanmar capital city of Naypyidaw, and registered Iran's 11th title.

Japan’s Toyoda Gosei Trefuerza finished in third place after edging past Shanghai Golden Age of China 3-2 (21–25, 25–23, 19–25, 25–17 and 13–15) in an exhausting five-set thriller.
