Several people shot in New York hospital, 2 dead including shooter

Multiple people have been injured and two others have been killed in a shooting at a hospital in New York City’s Bronx neighborhood, police say.

The incident began as an armed man wearing a lab coat opened fire on people inside Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in Morris Heights at around 3 pm local time on Friday.

“Active shooting in Bronx Leb. Two confirmed shot. Man dressed all in black. Smoke from the 16th floor,” the NYPD Special Operations Division posted on Twitter a few minutes after the shooting. “Blood trail leading from second to eighth floor.”

As many as five people, including three doctors, have been injured. The condition of the doctors was not known. 

The shooter, identified by police as 35-year-old Dr. Henry Bello, is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The hospital is on lockdown and people have been warned to avoid the areas around the hospital.
