The world's oldest automated teller machine (ATM) has been turned into gold to celebrate its 50th  anniversary in London.

The first ATM was opened in June, 1967, at a Barclays Bank branch north of London. It was the brainchild of a Scottish inventor, who was commissioned by Barclays to create six cash dispensers.

To commemorate the anniversary, the bank laid down a red carpet and placed stanchions in front of the machine.

Despite newer technologies, such as online and mobile banking, the ATM still remains popular.
