World football's governing body, FIFA, has defended the use of video assistant referees at the Confederations Cup in Russia, despite a number of controversial refereeing decisions at the tournament.

FIFA's head of referees added that video reviews prevented some major mistakes from being made. However, Massimo Busacca admitted that many aspects of the system should be improved to reduce errors.

The new system is being tested at the Confederations Cup, and FIFA is looking to introduce it at the 2018 World Cup next year.

VAR involves qualified referees who review game-changing incidents including goals, penalty, and red card decisions. The system stirred controversy on Sunday when it helped contribute to the wrong player being shown the red card in a match between Cameroon and Germany.
