Flawless Colombian emerald sold in New York

Flawless Colombian emerald

A flawless Colombian emerald, once owned by the Rockefeller family, has been sold during an auction in New York for more than five and a half million dollars.

The 18.4-carat emerald was purchased by famous jeweler, Harry Winston. It became the most expensive emerald per carat ever sold at auction.

John D. Rockefeller originally bought the rare untreated emerald in 1930 to offer it as a gift to his wife. Formerly, the record emerald sale at auction was for the 23.46-carat emerald belonged to actress Elizabeth Taylor. That was sold for over six and a half million dollars, but its price per carat was significantly lower.
