Ourameh collects bronzes in IWF junior championships, ends Iran medal drought

Iranian weightlifter Rahman Ourameh has earned two bronze medals at the 2017 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships in Japan to put an end to the Islamic Republic’s medal drought at the prestigious international tournament.

On Wednesday, Ourameh clinched the medals in the 97-kilogram weight category in the Japanese capital city of Tokyo.

Uzbek weightlifter Farkhodbek Sobirov raised 182 kilograms overhead to claim the snatch gold medal. Belarusian contestant Yauheni Tsikhantsou took the silver with a lift of 171 kilograms. Kyryl Pyrohov from Ukraine scooped the bronze with a lift of 169 kilograms.

Sobirov topped the clean and jerk podium with 210 kilograms. Tsikhantsou finished second and won the silver with 207 kilograms. Iran’s Ourameh earned the bronze with a lift of 205 kilograms.

Sobirov finished the competition tied on an aggregate of 390 kilograms. Belarusian and Iranian competitors Tsikhantsou and Ourameh landed in the second and third overall slots with 387 and 264 kilograms respectively.

The 2017 IWF Junior World Championships began in Tokyo, Japan, on June 15 and will finish on June 23.

The tournament has brought together a total of 265 male and female athletes from 50 countries.
