War on Yemen

Saudi jets have launched fresh airstrikes on Yemen, leaving more deaths and destruction in the Arab country.

The latest attack targeted a market in Sa’ada province. At least 25 people were killed and one person was injured in the bombing. The casualties include women and children. Earlier, the Yemeni army backed by Ansarullah fighters attacked Saudi forces inside the kingdom. A Saudi soldier was shot dead by Yemeni sniper fire in the Asir region. The attack was in retaliation for Saudi Arabia’s relentless bombardments of Yemen which began in March 2015. Over 12,000 people, mostly civilians have been killed since then.

Battle for Mosul

An Iraqi airstrike has killed 15 terrorists in Mosul’s last major district under Daesh control outside the Takfiri group’s headquarters in the old city.

The airstrike targeted a terrorist gathering near the city’s al-Jumhuri hospital in Al-Shifa district north of the old city. According to the Iraqi military, seven foreign nationals are among the terrorists killed. The Iraqi military command says it hopes to recapture AL-Shifa district in the coming days completing the encirclement of the old city. Baghdad says an operation will start very soon to liberate the Daesh stronghold from different directions. The terror group has used the historic area as its headquarters since 2014 when it announced its rule in Iraq and Syria.

Pro-refugee rally

Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of the Spanish capital, Madrid, in support of asylum seekers.

The protesters urged the government to fulfill its pledge to give shelter to refugees from war-torn countries like Syria. They were holding a huge banner welcoming the asylum seekers. Spain has taken in fewer than 10 percent of the refugees it promised to accept. It has relocated or resettled only around 1,300 of the more than 17,000 people from camps in Italy, Greece, Turkey and Libya, that it promised to take in.

Kashmir tensions

Indian-controlled Kashmir is observing yet another shutdown to protest civilian killings at the hands of Indian forces. The anti-India sentiment running high in the region has resurfaced following the killing of prominent pro-freedom leaders.

Bogota bomb explosion

A powerful explosion has hit one of the most crowded malls on Colombia’s capital, killing three people and injuring 9 others.

People were evacuated from movies theaters and stores of Bogota after the incident. Ambulances and fire trucks rushed to the scene and the injured were taken to a hospital. The blast happened in a restroom on the second floor of the mall in the Zona Rosa neighborhood. The city's mayor has condemned the incident as a cowardly terrorist attack. President Juan Manuel Santos has also denounced the attack and ordered an investigation. Authorities' attention immediately focused on the country's largest still active rebel group, the National Liberation Army, or ELN. But the group denies it had any role in the bombing.

US sailors found

The US navy says the seven sailors who went missing after a ship collision off the Pacific coast of Japan, have been found dead.

The United States’ Seventh Fleet said in a statement that the missing crew’s bodies were found in flooded berthing compartments of the damaged destroyer. The Japan-based military formation added that the victims’ bodies are being transferred to a naval hospital in Yokosuka where they would be identified. The sailors' names are to be released upon heir identification. The USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine-flagged cargo ship off the coast of Japan in the early hours of Saturday. Several other members aboard the vessel were injured in the incident.
