Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers rank first in junior Asian championships

The Iranian junior national Greco-Roman wrestling team has put in impressive performances at the Junior Asian Wrestling Championships in Taiwan to be crowned the champion of the prestigious continental sports event.

The young Iranian sportsmen notched 71 points to stand atop the podium by a wide margin in the team division of the tournament in the center-western Taiwanese city of Taichung.

They were followed by representatives from Kazakhstan, who tallied 58 points to claim the second spot.

Wrestlers from India and Uzbekistan sat in the third and fourth places with 55 and 54 points respectively.

On Friday, Pouya Dadmarz received a bye in the first round of the 50-kilogram weight category. He overcame an opponent from South Korea 8-0 in his opening contest, before defeating his Uzbek rival 7-3 in the semi-finals.

The Iranian wrestler triumphed over a representative from Kazakhstan 2-0 in the final, and won the gold medal.

In the 120-kilogram division, Amir Mohammad Hajipour snatched the gold medal for Iran after downing an Indian wrestler 6-3 in the final round.

Earlier in the tournament, Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers had managed to scooped five medals at the Junior Asian Wrestling Championships.

The Junior Asian Wrestling Championships kicked off in Taichung, Taiwan, on June 15, and will wrap up on June 18, 2017.

The tournament has brought together dozens of male and female freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers from various Asian countries, including China, Chinese Taipei, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea and Uzbekistan.
