Esteghlal Khuzestan appoints Veisi as new head coach

Abdollah Veisi, the new head coach of Esteghlal Melli-Sanati Khuzestan Football Club

The former manager of Foolad Mobarakeh Sepahan Sport Club, Abdollah Veisi, has been appointed as the new head coach of Esteghlal Melli-Sanati Khuzestan Football Club, commonly known as Esteghlal Khuzestan, on a one-year contract.

Veisi had earlier become the head coach of the Ahvaz-based club, which currently competes in the professional Persian Gulf Pro League, on May 18, 2013.

The 46-year-old led Esteghlal Khuzestan to 12th position in his first season, three points better than from relegation zone.

However, Veisi finished the second season in the 14th position, placing his team in the relegation play-off against Mes Kerman Football Club. Esteghlal Khuzestan won the play-off 3–0 on aggregate, and kept its Persian Gulf Pro League spot.

On May 13, 2016, Veisi claimed the Persian Gulf Pro League, formerly known as the Iran Pro League (IPL), following a 2-0 victory over Zob Ahan Isfahan Football Club. He was named as the best manager of the season after the end of the tournament.

He signed a four-year contract with Sepahan ten days later as its new manager. Veisi was, nevertheless, sacked on March 17, 2017 after producing a series of bad results, and placing Sepahan in the 7th place.

On May 23, Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal notched up a 2-1 win over Esteghlal Khuzestan at the 2017 AFC Champions League Round of 16.

Hassan Beit Saeid gave the Iranian team the lead three minutes before the halftime break.

Al Hilal then came back from going a goal behind, and Abdullah Al Dossary and Carlos Eduardo scored two goals to earn the Saudi club an advantage ahead of the second-leg.

Esteghlal Kuuzestan failed to advance to the AFC Champions League quarter-final round with the result.
