We won’t let Trump ‘divide our communities,’ Khan says
London Mayor Sadiq Khan lashes out at US President Donald Trump over his divisive comments in the wake of terror in the British capital.
The Muslim mayor who had previously said he was too busy to respond to Trump’s criticism on Twitter, spoke up in an interview with the state-run BBC Monday.
“Some people thrive on feud and division. We are not going to let Donald Trump divide our communities,” he said.
On Saturday, terror on and near the London Bridge left at least seven people dead and wounded almost 50 others.
Three knife-wielding assailants drove a hired van into pedestrians on the bridge and stabbed others nearby in an attack initially praised and subsequently claimed by the Daesh Takfiri group.
Early on Sunday, Trump took to Twitter to hit the Muslim mayor for his call for calm amid increased police presence.
On Monday morning, Trump released a new tweet, saying, “Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his ‘no reason to be alarmed’ statement. MSM is working hard to sell it.”
The mayor told Sky News on Monday that he was focused on more important issue than Trump’s comments.
“I just haven't got time to respond to tweets from Donald Trump. Honestly, I've got better and more important things to focus on.”

He also appeared on Channel 4, where he asserted that the US president’s state visit to the UK should not go ahead.
“I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” he said. “When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong.”
Trump’s comments against the Labour mayor has even irked Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May, who has always highlighted the UK-US special relationship.
