Multiple people have been killed in a workplace shooting in Orlando, Florida, law enforcement authorities said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said that the "situation" has been contained, indicating that there was no active shooter on the scene.

"OCSO working shooting scene that has stabilized. Multiple fatalities," the sheriff's office posted on Twitter.

The shooting was reported about 8 a.m. Monday in an industrial district of suburban Orlando.

Police later said a disgruntled former employee shot and killed five people in a business before turning the gun on himself. Three men and a woman were found dead at the scene.

Authorities have not name the dead gunman but said there was no connection to terrorism.

Governor Rick Scott said he had been briefed by law enforcement about the situation in Orlando.

"I ask all Floridians to pray for the families impacted by this senseless act of violence," he added.

The mass shooting came a week before the first anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando - the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

Gunman Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured dozens more at a nightclub in Orlando before being shot dead by police last June.

Statistics by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that firearms kill more than 33,000 people in the US every year, a number that includes accidental discharges, murders and suicides.
