Iran’s Sarmayeh Bank comes 6th in 2017 Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championship
Iranian professional volleyball team Sarmayeh Bank has lost to Chinese Taipei’s Taiwan Power in the classification round of the 2017 Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championship in Kazakhstan, and ranked sixth at the end of the continental sporting event.
On Wednesday, the Iranian team slumped to the Taiwanese club 1-3 (20–25, 25–18, 20–25 and 12–25) at the end of the fifth-place match at the Boris Alexandrov Sports Palace in the eastern Kazak city of Ust-Kamenogorsk.
Sarmayeh Bank’s head coach Mitra Shabanian fielded Shabnam Alikhani, Maedeh Borhani, Mahdien Khajeh-Kolaei, Farnoush Sheikhi and Niloufar Ebrahimi in the initial line-up.
The Taiwanese sportswomen started the match in a more determined manner and were better in service, reception and attacks. They maintained the lead to surge ahead, and grabbed a 25-20 win in the opening set.
The Persians came from behind in the second set, and racked up points to claim it by 25 points to 18.
Taiwan Power players tried to establish a faster offence in the third set. Sarmayeh Bank was able to keep up with the pace. The Chinese Taipei club continued to utilize middle attackers with much success to take the third set at 25-20.
In the fourth set, Sarmayeh Bank tried to improve its play with Mahsa Saberi continuing to score from the wing and Farnoosh Sheikhi at the middle.
The Iranian side was later unable to post good defense as the Chinese Taipei club used combination plays and even scored from the service line. Taiwan Power finished the final set 25-12 at last.
The 2017 Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championship was held in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, from May 25 to 31.
It was organized by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) with Volleyball Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan (VFRK).
The tournament will serve as the Asian qualifiers for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship with the champion qualifying for the world championship. Thailand’s female professional volleyball team Supreme Chonburi won the title.
