Iran books berth at Beach Handball World Championship

The Iranian men's national beach handball team

The Iranian men's national beach handball team has finished in the third place overall at the sixth edition of Asian Men's & Women's Beach Handball Championship in Thailand, and secured a place at the 2018 Beach Handball World Championship.

On Monday, the Iranian squad started the opening half of the third-place play-off against Vietnam in a better fashion, and could win it by a 15-10 score line.

The Vietnamese players, however, made a comeback in the second period, and managed to take the half 20-16 to cherish their hopes for a berth at world championship.

The game went into one-on-one penalty shoot-outs in the end, and Iran finished it by 8-6.

Qatar also beat Oman 2-0 in the final match and won the title for the fourth time in a row.

The Asian Men's & Women's Beach Handball Championship kicked off in Pattaya, Thailand, on May 8, and wrapped up on May 15, 2017.

The top three teams qualified for the Beach Handball World Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Sochi, Russia, next year.
