Venezuela in turmoil

Protests for and against the government continue in Venezuela with no signs of abating. Clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces have left dozens of demonstrators dead in the past weeks. Venezuela’s opposition has organized the protests to dissuade President Nicolas Maduro from implementing a plan aimed at drawing up a new constitution. The opposition says the rewriting of Venezuela’s charter is an attempt to postpone early elections with the aim of keeping Maduro in office. Caracas denies the accusation.

US arms sales to the UAE
It’s been described as a big military package for a small Persian Gulf Arab state: The United States is to sell the United Arab Emirates Patriot Missiles to the UAE. The package, estimated to be worth 2 billion dollars, is said to include 60 Patriot Advanced Capability 3 missiles and 100 Patriot Guidance Enhanced-Tactic missiles. The deal will also include US government- and contractor-provided technical, engineering and logistics support services and are to be produced by the Lockheed Martin and Raytheon companies. A statement by Washington says the deal will “contribute to the national security of the United States” and “improve the security of an ally that is a force for political and economic stability in the Middle East.”
