Explosion kills Egyptian colonel, injures 3 recruits in Sinai

The undated photo shows Egyptian soldiers in Sinai.

A colonel in the Egyptian military has been killed and three recruits have been injured in an explosion that targeted their armored vehicle in the Sinai Peninsula, security sources say.

The Sunday attack was carried out in northern Sinai, where Egyptian government forces are battling militancy in connection with the presence of the Daesh Takfiri terrorists.

Sources provided neither the exact location of the explosion nor further details.

Last week, militants in Sinai opened fire on members of Tarabeen tribe and killed a dozen of them. The tribe members have been armed by the Egyptian military to counter the militants operating across the region.

The militants have also extended their campaign to other parts of Egypt, most recently attacking churches in the capital Cairo and other cities.

The photo purportedly shows an explosion as militants attack an Egyptian police checkpoint in el-Arish, North Sinai, Egypt.

In early May, gunmen attacked an Egyptian police convoy in Cairo, killing three officers and wounding five others.
