EU snubs US again in Iran

P5+1 and EU representative with Iran after signing the nuclear deal.

The 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries including the US came into force in January 2016.

The western governments agreed to remove their sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on the country’s nuclear program. Nevertheless, the US has kept some of the sanctions in place particularly those that target Iran’s banking system.

What seems to be the US’s breach of the deal, has put obstacles in the way of other signatories of the accord doing business with Iran. This has been a cause for concern for Europeans, who have been frequent visitors to Tehran since last year, in a bid to revive their decades-old agreements in the energy sector. In the latest of such visits, the EU’s energy commissioner is leading dozens of European firms in a business forum in Tehran over the weekend.
