Asian champions Iran have reached the quarterfinals of the Beach Soccer World Cup in The Bahamas, following a 2-1 penalty shootout win over Nigeria in their last Group B encounter.

It was a back and forth battle on Monday, with Iran taking the lead 3 times and each time the Nigerians fought back and tied the game.

Nigeria moved ahead for the first time in the 3rd period, but Mohammad Mokhtari scored his second of the match to tie it at 4-all. With no more goals exchanged in regulation and extra time, matters had to be settled in a penalty shootout when the Iranians outperformed their rivals 2-1 to finish second in the group and set up a quarterfinal showdown with Switzerland.
