Saudi Arabia's new position at UN

A development has put the spotlight on Saudi Arabia: Riyadh's election to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. This has drawn condemnation from rights groups which list Saudi Arabia as one of the major violators of women’s rights. The Commission on the Status of Women’s main mission is to assess the challenges in reaching gender equality. The addition of the Persian Gulf Arab state to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women has been condemned by UN Watch, a nongovernmental organization that monitors the world body.

Guterres: Israel's rights need to be respected

The new UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is facing a fresh wave of criticism for what many see as his blatant support for Israel. Guterres emphasized recently that he would be in the front line in fighting anti-Semitism globally. He said in a speech at the World Jewish Congress offices in New York that Israel needed to be treated like others. The UN chief also said he would struggle to eradicate anti-Israel bias in the world body. Such remarks have now created serious doubts about how prepared the new UN chief is to defend the rights of a nation that Israel is suppressing – the Palestinians.

And then there were deux

It was an election like no other in the history of France. The Socialist Party and the Center-right Republican Party failed to get through to the second round. Instead, the far-Right Party of Marine Le Penn and Emanuel Macon from the newly-founded Party called En Marche. are heading to the second round. This is clearly uncharted territory in French politics, since the main stream parties were beaten.
