Scientists: Captive-bred panda can mate in wild

Chinese scientists have completed the country’s first trial for breeding pandas in the wilderness.

The project at the Wolong National Nature Reserve enables captive-bred panda to naturally mate with a wild one.

To seek the results, scientists studied recording pens installed on pandas’ neck rings. Their research has recently led to the discovery that one of their females had copulated in the wild.

Experts say further observation is needed to make sure that female pandas can actually bear cubs but the finding is still considered a successful progress in panda breeding.

Giant pandas were previously classified as an endangered species but their status developed to vulnerable in 2016 thanks to conservation efforts.
