White House counselor Kellyanne Conway says Democrats should stop “violence” by opponents of US President Donald Trump.

The 50-year-old made the comments in an interview with Fox News from the south lawn of the White House on Monday.

She was referencing violence that broke out among supporters and opponents of the Republican president amid nationwide rallies calling on him to release his tax returns.

“I would love to hear the new DNC chairman, Tom Perez, Bernie Sanders, the Democratic senator from Vermont, who are going out on the road starting today, and I would love to hear Hillary Clinton, who lost to Donald Trump handily… I would love to hear them come forward as leaders of the Democratic Party and tell the people to stop. They have a right to express their First Amendment beliefs but at the same time, violence is not going to get us anywhere,” she said.

On Saturday, thousands of people took part in Tax March rallies, which Trump called “small,” including a march to his Mar-a-Lago resort in South Florida, where the president usually stays for the weekend as well as other ones in New York and Washington, DC.

The president responded to the protests by boasting about his electoral victory in the 2016 presidential election, a pitch also followed by Conway.

“Six months after Donald Trump won 306 electoral votes, you have people still trying to make it go away, and this is the president. This is the people’s house. This is their government,” said the Trump counselor.

Ever since he started running, the real estate tycoon has refused to voluntarily release his tax returns like his predecessors.

The administration, meanwhile, is attempting to tie that to election, suggesting that the race is over.

“I would love to hear Democratic leaders of the party, instead of still talking about the election, move forward and help us negotiate,” Conway said, echoing an earlier tweet by the United States commander in chief. “Help us get some Democratic votes on tax reform and healthcare reform and infrastructure.”
