A village in southern Spain has become well-known worldwide for making high-end leather products for top brands around the globe.
The village of ‘Ubrik’ in Cadiz province is a centuries-old leather manufacturing hub. There are around one hundred workshops, which are mostly family-run and employ an average of 40 workers.
They have managed to survive the economic crisis that hit Spain in the past decade as well as cheaper manufacturing costs offered by Chinese competitors.
In recent years, the luxury brands have been returning to do business in ‘Ubrik’. Data shows that exports of leather manufactures from the province of Cadiz have increased more than threefold from 2009 to 2015.
