Iranian tennis players have achieved a resounding victory over the Vietnamese outfit at the play-off round of the 2017 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in the country’s central city of Isfahan.

On Saturday and the second day of the regional tournament at Isfahan’s 22 Bahman Stadium, Iran’s Amirvala Ma’danchi and Ashkan Shokoufi played some cracking balls against Vietnamese rivals Lê Quốc Khánh and Phạm Minh Tuấn in a double meet. The balls found targets out of defense, and the hosts claimed the first set by 6 points to 4.

The Persians continued to outdo the Vietnemse competitors as the game extended into the second set, clinching the period with the same result as that of the first.

Earlier, Shahin Khaledan had taken on Phạm Minh Tuấn in a singles competition, and downed the Vietnamese opponent 6-2 at the end of the first set.

The 26-year-old Iranian sportsman unleashed a number of good serves in the second set, and managed to better the fixture and record a 6-4 win.

Moreover, Iran’s Hamid Reza Naddaf claimed the opener 5-4 against Nguyễn Hoàng Thiên, before the Vietnamese tennis player had to resign due to an injury he had picked up early in the match.

The play-off round of the 2017 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II started in Isfahan, central Iran, on April 7, and will wrap up on April 9.

The Iranian outfit consists of Shahin Khaledan, Hamid Reza Naddaf and Amirvala Ma’danchi.

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's lawn tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. Iran competed in its first Davis Cup in 1962.
