Stark bleaching threatening coral life

A recent study suggests that the only way to save the world’s coral life is a raging war on global warming.

According to the research conducted on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, reducing pollution and curbing overfishing will not prevent the severe coral bleaching. This, as 91 percent of the reef has been hit at least once during 3 bleaching events and a 4th wave is already underway. Scientists do admit that local protection of the reefs can partially recover the coral damaged by increasing ocean temperatures.

But they add that such recovery efforts take years and are futile when it comes to halting the destructive bleaching in the first place. In that regard, the experts call for a shift in preservation policies, insisting that climate change should not be overlooked in future attempts to save the world’s coral life.

The findings come as scores of previously colored coral reefs have turned to desolate, white graveyards in the recent years. Preserving the coral reefs is crucial since they are the backbone of marine food chain and also serve to shield neighboring coasts from storms.
