Iran’s Petrochimi Bandar Imam vice champion in WABA Clubs Championship

Iranian professional basketball club Petrochimi Bandar Imam has ended its campaign at the 2017 West Asian Basketball Association (WABA) Clubs Championship in Jordan, and finished in the second place overall in the regional tournament.

The Mahshahr-based club, which competes in the Iranian Basketball Super League, lost to Lebanon’s Al Riyadi 69-83 in the title clash staged in the Jordanian capital city of Amman on Friday.

The victory put the last touches on Al Riyadi’s dominant five-game sweep of the competition. 

The Lebanese club had previously defeated Iranian professional basketball clubs Petrochimi Bandar Imam and Palayesh Naft Abadan besides Sareyyet Ramallah of Palestine in Pool A fixtures, before beating Naft Abadan 74-64 in the semi-final round once again.

Al Riyadi’s 29-year-old Nigerian American captain Alade Aminu got the the highest number of points tallied in the final. He garnered 24 points as well as 11 rebounds.

The 2017 WABA Clubs Championship started in the Jordanian capital city of Amman on March 12, and finished on March 14.

The tournament brought together Iranian clubs Palayesh Naft Abadan, Petrochimi Bandar Imam and Chimidor, Sareyyet Ramallah of Palestine, Lebanese clubs Al Riyadi and Sagesse in addition to al-Mina'a basketball club of Iraq.
