Floor system converts footsteps into electricity

Pavegen floor tiles generate electricity by harnessing the power of footsteps.

A floor system, which converts footsteps into electricity, has been showcased at a fair in Texas.

The floor coating is able to generate 200 times more power than its previous model. The head of the company behind the idea says with the footfall of 200,000 people per day, the system can take the entirety of the street lights off the grid for the whole night.

The company is seeking to reward consumer behavior with digital currency, which is based on the energy one user produces.

A Smartphone application will track the distance and time the user takes to walk on the floor.
