NASA has successfully tested Orion spacecraft’s parachute system in the Arizona desert.
To carry out the test, an instrumented replica of the Orion capsule was used.
The test module was deployed from a C-17 aircraft over the US Army's Yuma Proving Ground.
The free fall started at an altitude of 7,600 meters before 2 drogue parachutes helped steady the descending capsule.
Then the 3 main parachutes inflated to facilitate a safe and flawless landing.
The test simulated an abort sequence. The successful test guarantees a safe emergency ejection if Orion capsule faces a problem at launch.
