Hong Kong defeats Iran 3-1 in Asian Youth Girls Championship

Young Iranian female volleyball players have tasted their second defeat at the preliminary round of the 11th edition of Asian Girls’ U18 Volleyball Championship in China, going down to Hong Kong side.

On Monday, the Hong Kong uad defeated Iran 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-21) in a Pool A match staged in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing.

The Iranian squad opened the game in a dominant fashion and racked up most of the points to outscore the Hong Kong players 25-23 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams started the second set with almost the same level, and exchanged aggressive attacks to assert their dominance over the court. The Southeastern Asians managed to establish their lead by three points after the second technical time out, and could eventually end the set 25-23.

 The Hong Kong players continued with their surge in the third set, and widened the gap with diverse attacks and blocks to claim it by 25 points to 18.

The Hong Kong volleyball players did not relinquish superiority after the break, and dominated the fourth set 25-21.

The national Iranian girls' U-18 volleyball team is scheduled to play against Uzbekistan in a classification game for the 9th to 11th place on Wednesday. 

The 11th edition of Asian Girls’ U18 Volleyball Championship started in Chongqing, China, on March 5, and will conclude on March 13, 2017.

It is the Asian qualification round for the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship in Argentina, which is due to take place from August 18 to 27, 2017.

The 12 participating teams were divided into four pools, with hosts China joining Hong Kong and Iran in Pool A. Japan, New Zealand and Samoa are in Pool B, with Thailand, Kazakhstan and Australia in Pool C. Pool D comprised Korea, Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan. 

Only top two teams from each pool after the preliminaries advanced to round of the last eight teams in Pool E and F, while the teams finishing third were relegated to the 9th-12th classification round.

Top four teams from the Asian meet will make the cut for the 20-team 2017 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U18 World Championship.
