Another Indian falls victim to suspected hate crime in US
Another Indian expatriate has fallen victim to a possible hate crime attack in the US, the third such incident targeting Indians over the past two weeks.
The 39-year-old Sikh man was working on his car in his driveway in Kent, State of Washington, on Friday when a masked white man shot him in the arm, while shouting "go back to your own country.”
No arrest has been made so far, but authorities are investigating the shooting as a suspected hate crime.
This is the third shooting incident targeting Indians over the past two weeks. On Thursday, a 43-year-old Indian-origin businessman was found dead of gunshot wounds near his Lancaster County home in South Carolina.
On February 27, an Indian engineer was killed at a restaurant in Kansas in a hate crime shooting that sent shockwaves across the US and India. Another Indian engineer and an American were also wounded in the shooting.
Adam Purinton, a white US Navy veteran arrested for the shooting, reportedly thought he had killed some "Iranian people."
According to witnesses, Purinton shouted “get out of my country” at the two Indian men, before he opened fire on them.
The racially-motivated shooting has raised fresh concerns about the treatment of immigrants, who have been targeted by President Donald Trump’s promises to ban travelers from seven Muslim countries and build a wall along the border with Mexico.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said it would be “absurd” to blame the attack on the president’s rhetoric.
