La Liga: Barcelona thrash Sporting Gijon 6-1

Neymar squeezes the ball between the upright and Iva Cuellar’s hand for Barcelona’s fifth goal.

Catalan giants Barcelona have humiliated Sporting Gijon 6-1 in front of a partisan crowd at Camp Nou, to maintain their momentum in the title race.

Argentinean ace Lionel Messi gave the hosts an early lead on Wednesday, after scoring with a beautiful header in the 9th minute. Juan Rodriguez then made it 2-0 for the Catalans by scoring an own goal after attempting to clear the ball off the line.

Carlos Castro managed to pull one back for the visitors, but Luis Suarez restored Barca’s two-goal cushion, as the Uruguayan hammered a right-footed volley into the net to make it 3-1.

But the home side didn’t stop there, they went on to add three more goals after the break through Paco Alcather, a marvelous free kick by Neymar, and a volley from close range by Ivan Rakitic, as Barca secured an emphatic win over Sporting Gijon at Camp Nou.
