Mexico Open: Nadal advances to quarterfinals

Rafael Nadal has thrashed Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the Mexican Open quarterfinals. 

The Spaniard won the tournament in 2005 and 20-13 and has a 12-match winning streak in the event. Nadal will face Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, who beat Australia's Jordan Thompson 6-4, 3-6, 6-Love.

Nadal is playing in his first tournament since losing to Roger Federer in the Australian Open final. Nadal is seeded second in the tournament, an Open 500 hard-court event that is loaded with a draw that also includes Serbian star Novak Djokovic and Croatia's Marin Cilic.

Meanwhile, Marin Chilich of Croatia beat countryman Borna Courich 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round of the Mexican Open on Wednesday. world number 8 reached the quarterfinals for the second tournament in a row. Cilic will play Steve Johnson on Friday.
