Iconic steam train returns to Britain

Train enthusiasts gather to admire the powerful steam engine at Appleby.

A steam train has staged a nostalgic return to Britain’s railways after half a century.

Hundreds of rail enthusiasts lined to welcome and witness the first steam train in 50 years to replace regular train passenger services.

The train which is powered by a Tornado locomotive made its debut journey on the historic route from Settle to Carlisle in northern England.

It took 18 years and three million pounds for the steam engine to be built. It was completed in 2008. The train will carry passengers for three days, making four journeys each day.

Almost all the seats up for grabs are already snapped up, these reserved spots account for around half of the 500 available seats on each journey.
