As the first ATP World Tour 500 event of the season, the Rotterdam Open, has kicked off with qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert pulling off a shock victory in the first round by beating Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.
Herbert faced the Spaniard in the opening match of the tournament on center court on Monday. It was a closely fought battle as there was little to separate the two.
However, it was the 109th ranked Frenchman who emerged on top after edging two tiebreakers to book his place in the second round. He will next meet Russian Evgeny Donskoy who defeated another Spaniard Marcel Granollers on Monday.
