Thousands of masked people have paraded through the ancient streets of Venice as part of the city’s unique and lush annual carnival.
Venetians, Romans and tourists gathered at the lagoon city’s narrow alleys to officiate the opening of the annual Carnival of Venice. Despite the cold and humid weather, large crowds turned up from early morning to observe the ceremony in costumes and masks to say farewell to winter and welcome spring.
The participants’ clothes ranged from lavish vintage attire belonging to the 18th century to home-made Zorro and Viking outfits. The riot of color and noise gave its place to a magnificent water parade at night.
The carnival runs until February 28th and offers a wide spectrum of exquisite masquerades, parades and exhibitions until its very last day.
