Volunteers form human chain to save whale pod

Volunteers try to help pilot whales back to sea in a race against time

Rescue efforts to save a new pod of whales continue in New Zealand after a recent incident saw hundreds of whales swimming aground.

Official rescuers and volunteers alike chained arms in neck-deep waters in a bid to prevent some 240 pilot whales from stranding themselves at Golden Bay.

Conservation officials of the remote beach say they’re sure this is a new group of whales as previously re-floated whales had been all tagged and none were with the new pod. This brings the total number of recently stranded whales to 650.

The tragedy started when 400 whales were discovered on a beach in Farewell Spit having beached themselves overnight on Thursday, 300 of them had already died.
