Trump called ‘draft-dodging chickenhawk’ at DNC forum
US President Donald Trump “thinks he’s too smart,” says a candidate for the Democratic National Committee (DNC), censuring him for being a “draft-dodging chickenhawk president.”
Pete Buttigieg, the democratic mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was one of the Democrats who spoke up against the new president at the DNC forum in Baltimore, Maryland, on Saturday.
The mayor, who was deployed to Afghanistan while serving in the Navy Reserves, said he will be “damned if we’re going to have a draft-dodging chickenhawk president of the United States – who thinks he’s too smart to read his own intelligence briefings – ordering the people I served with back into another conflict because he can’t be bothered to do his job properly.”
According to a New York Times report released in August last year, Trump received five deferments from the military draft during the Vietnam War, four for college and one for bad feet.
Buttigieg (pictured below) noted that liberals should “tap into the moral outrage” across the United States after the president’s ban on seven Muslim-majority countries.
Trump recently issued an executive order to impose a 90-day entry ban on citizens from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia, block refugees from Syria indefinitely, and suspend all refugee admissions for 120 days.
Minnesota Representative Keith Ellison was another Democrat to censure Trump Saturday, particularly over the arrest of hundreds of undocumented immigrants this week.
"We've got to be in solidarity, we've got to be with them. We’ve got to be on the line, carrying the sign,” said Ellison (pictured above).
Donna Brazile, the DNC’s interim chairwoman, also slammed Trump in a statement, saying, “For the last few days, in communities across our country, some of our neighbors heard a knock at their door. Peaceful, hard-working people were asked for their papers. Some were torn from their homes, leaving mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters behind.”
“This is not happening in some faraway dictatorship you have trouble finding on a map. This is happening here, in our America. And we have to keep working, keep fighting, and keep speaking out until it stops,” said Brazile (pictured above).
