Thierry Neuville holds a 28.1 second lead over Jari-Matti Latvala after the opening eight stages of the Rally of Sweden on Friday.

Despite frozen conditions at Varmland , Belgian driver Thierry Neuville managed to take the first place thanks to a 28.1 second lead over Latvala of Finland. Ott Tanak is further 21 seconds behind Latvala to finish in 3rd.

Fighting to stay in the competition is also Kris Meeke, who slid his Citroen off the road into a snow bank on Stage 5. He was fortunate to get out at all, but Meeke struggled on and a second place finish on Stage 7 allowed him to climb back up to fourth place overall, 52 seconds behind the leader.

Finnish driver Juho Hanninen wasn't so lucky as he lost control on Stage 5 and his Toyota Yaris hit a tree. Ireland's Craig Breen had a good start to the day, but a series of spins made him sit almost two minutes off the lead down in eighth place.
