An exhibition featuring a new flurry of works dreamt up by a record-breaking artist has gone on display in Germany.

26 abstract artworks by German artist Gerhard Richter were presented for the first time to the public at Cologne’s Ludwig Museum.

All painted in 2016, the eye-catching pieces come in different sized canvasses.

Most of the photo-realistic works feature bright hues and multilayered composition and have a progressive if not uneasy feel to them.

The exhibition also marked the 85th birthday of the artist who has been described as Picasso of the 21st century.

Richter has set many records throughout his artistic career including the highest price achieved at auction by a living artist.

The exhibition will run until May the first and the paintings will be then moved to Richter’s hometown of Dresden for almost 3 months.
